CE Mark Being Replaced by New UKCA Marking

16 September 2020
The 31st December 2020 marks the end of the transition period now that the UK has left the EU (BREXIT).

The Government have announced the launch of the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking that will be used for goods placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). The UKCA marking covers most goods which previously required the CE marking.

From 1st January 2021, in the majority of cases, the new UKCA mark will need to be applied to goods being sold in Great Britain.

The requirements for goods placed on the market in Northern Ireland are slightly different, as the UKCA marking cannot be used alone. Instead they will require the CE marking or UK (NI) marking.

Who will it affect?

If your products fall into any of the below categories you will need to use the new UKCA marking from 1st January 2020:

  • Any products for the Great British (England, Scotland and Wales) market

  • Any products that are covered by legislation which requires the UKCA marking

  • Any products that require mandatory third-party conformity assessment

  • Any products where a conformity assessment has been carried out by a UK conformity assessment body and you haven’t transferred your conformity assessment files from your UK body to an EU recognised body before 1 January 2021

Please note that this new marking does not affect existing stock or goods that were manufactured before 1st January 2021. In this case the goods can still be sold in Britain with a CE marking even if covered by a certificate of conformity issued by a UK body.

How do you use it?

As with the previous CE mark, the UKCA marking needs to be applied to the product itself or to the packaging. In some cases, it may be placed on the manuals or on other supporting literature however this will vary depending on specific product regulations.
