According to Chris Aston, Auditel’s Managing Director, “Achieving this standard is fundamental to Auditel’s environmental strategy. Time for action is now, and we all have to reduce the impact we are having on our planet before it’s too late.”

What is ISO 14064-1?
ISO 14064-1 (Greenhouse Gas Inventory) is one of the leading international sustainability standards.
It ensures that an organisation’s carbon footprint calculations are accurate, thorough, and conform with the ISO 14064-1 framework. For this reason, many organisations view ISO 14064-1 as the first step towards achieving their environmental goals.
The drive to achieve ISO 14064-1 aligns with the UK Government’s pledge to reach net zero. However, ISO 14064-1 is by no means exclusive to the UK; the standard is popular among organisations globally.
ISO 14064-1 works differently from other standards, with three steps: determine, report and verify.
Three steps to achieving ISO 14064-1 verification
Auditel followed the steps required to achieve the impressive ISO 14064-1 standard:
Step #1: Determining the scope and measurement boundaries
The first step is to gather information from both the organisation and upstream and downstream stakeholders, including:
-
Scope 1 – direct emissions from owned or controlled sources.
-
Scope 2 – indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling.
-
Scope 3 – other indirect emissions in the value chain (e.g. waste treatment, purchasing goods, employee travel).
This collated data forms the basis of the organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions, with conversion factors used for the calculations.
Step #2: Reporting the greenhouse gas inventory
The organisation’s greenhouse gas inventory report must be complete, consistent, accurate and transparent to achieve ISO 14064-1.
The greenhouse gas inventory report must also include:
-
How the organisation developed their greenhouse gas inventory
-
Emissions data (across relevant scopes 1, 2 and 3 – as required)
Step #3: Independent verification
To officially achieve ISO 14064-1, the organisation requires third-party verification from a certification body such as NQA.
This verification confirms that the greenhouse gas inventory report is accurate, reliable and robust – in turn allowing the organisation to:
-
Demonstrate a commitment to the environment among internal and external stakeholders.
-
Make future decisions, knowing their greenhouse gas inventory stands up to inspection.
ISO 14064-1 can seem complex, with our verification process guide here to help.
Auditel’s impressive feat of ISO 14064-1 verification
Auditel achieved ISO 14064-1 verification in 2023, with Peter Davidson, Procurement and Carbon Specialist, leading the project.
According to NQA Regional Assessor Clare Braham, “I conducted the pre-verification and the verification for Auditel’s GHG Inventory. Peter had all the documentation ready and issued before the pre-verification date, including the GHG report, GHG inventory and most importantly, the GHG source documents (i.e. invoices, franchisee details, etc).
Peter explained clearly and precisely how he had completed the calculation and estimations, which led to a smooth and thorough verification process with no idle time. Peter was highly prepared and therefore allowed me to prepare in advance, making the verification experience with Auditel a pleasure to deal with.”
The key to achieving ISO 14064-1? Readily available documents and clear calculations.
