Consultation on the Future for Food, Farming and the Environment in a Green Brexit.

29 March 2018

Leaving the European Union (EU) provides the UK with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reform agriculture. DEFRA have produced a paper that outlines how we plan to change the way we use the land, so as better to promote health and harmony.

Michael Gove states:

“The proposals in this paper set out a range of possible paths to a brighter future for farming. They are the beginning of a conversation, not a conclusion and we want everyone who cares about the food we eat and the environment around us to contribute.”

The paper covers:

  • Moving away from the Common Agricultural Policy in England

  • Implementing our new agricultural policy in England

  • The framework for our new agricultural policy

The Government will introduce an Agriculture Bill that breaks from the CAP, and provides the United Kingdom with the ability to set out a domestic policy that will stand the test of time.

It will make sure that Parliament has due scrutiny of the agriculture legislative programme and will seek consent from the devolved legislatures where relevant in order to ensure that farmers and land managers have time to prepare and adjust.

When does this close: 8th May 2018.
