Summary
The use of heavy fuel oil by ships in Arctic waters is banned from the 1st July 2024, with some exceptions allowed until 2029. Ships are still allowed to carry heavy fuel oil as cargo but must not use it as fuel. If a ship has used or carried heavy fuel oil as fuel before entering Arctic waters, it must be removed from the ship before entry, but cleaning of pipelines and tanks is not required.
