Summary

European Union Member States are required to ensure that outdoor air quality is assessed and managed in order to minimise the harmful effects on human and environmental health. Member States are specifically required to:

• introduce national legislation and administrative provisions needed to comply with this Directive by 11th December 2026;

• keep levels of pollutants in ambient air below the limit values outlined in Annex I;

• establish air quality plans and short-term action plans for areas which exceed, or are at risk of exceeding, these values; and

• ensure the public and any relevant organisations are adequately informed of the above information.
