The aim of this Act is to improve air quality, tackle waste, improve diversity and make other environmental improvements. It gives a legal framework for environmental governance in the UK and bring in measures for improvement of the environment, in relation to waste, resource efficiency, air quality, water, nature or biodiversity and conservation.
 
There are no direct duties for most organisations under this Act, however there are duties for the Government, some public bodies, and other organisations such as The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP).
