Future Ireland Fund and Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund Act 2024

12 August 2024
Comes into force: 30th July 2024

Jurisdiction: Republic of Ireland

This Act establishes both the “Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund” and the “Future Ireland Fund” within the Republic of Ireland. These new funds replace the “National Surplus (Exceptional contingencies) Reserve Fund”, which is now dissolved.

The Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund is State funded and will provide capital for certain environmental projects between 2026 and 2030. To qualify for funding projects must meet certain criteria, including:

•    reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
•    achieving the environmental objectives for surface waters and surface water bodies;
•    implementing a programme of measures for achieving the environmental objectives for groundwater;
•    establishing environmental targets and associated indicators for shared marine regions; and
•    achieving certain conservation objectives and measures.

The Future Ireland Fund is introduced to help support sustainable State expenditure from 2041 and is not relevant to the environmental duties of organisations.
