Top tip for people looking at certification?
Keep systems simple, but not simplistic. If you can’t explain it easily, its likely over complicated. Be clear in the value that certification will add, and what you are looking to achieve. Make sure the standard works for you, and that you don’t work for the standard.What do you find is the most common point of misunderstanding regarding certification or specific standards when visiting clients?
Not everything needs to be documented. Systems can become unwieldy and excessive. Keeping them proportionate and the application of risk-based thinking can often determine what should be written down. For us, we clarify risk-based thinking regularly, by asking:
- Could a failure be catastrophic?
- Is it done by lots of people?
- Is it seldom done?
- Is it a legal or other (e.g. customer, contractual) requirement?
If not, consider if documented information adds value.
