Observed every year on 8 March, International Women's Day recognises women's accomplishments, raises awareness about gender equality, and champions women's empowerment. This global event highlights the social, economic, cultural, and political contributions of women while advocating for their rights. It serves as a platform to celebrate progress, address ongoing disparities, and push for a future where women enjoy equal rights and opportunities.

This year’s theme: Accelerate Action

This year’s theme is a worldwide call to acknowledge strategies, resources, and initiatives that positively impact women's advancement.

At the current rate of progress, full gender parity will not be achieved until 2158 - roughly five generations from now. The need to #AccelerateAction highlights the urgency of taking decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for an increased need to address barriers and biases that women face, both personally and professionally.

Voices of Women at NQA

At NQA, we recognise the incredible achievements of women in our organisation and the wider industry. To mark International Women’s Day, some of our colleagues have shared their thoughts on what this day means to them.

Cathy Donnelly: Client Executive

"I started as a temp in the industry 13 years ago, but I soon found that my qualifications allowed me to build a long-term career in this field. Certification, especially in Health and Safety, was predominantly a male-dominated space, but by using my technical knowledge, diligence, and understanding of the subject, I was able to challenge preconceived norms. My advice to any woman looking to succeed is to know your subject and believe in yourself. Respect is gained, not given, and that starts with self-belief and recognising your own worth. I have been inspired by many women over the years, including Michelle Obama and Deborah Meaden, who stand firm in their knowledge and presence. One of my favourite quotes is: 'Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.' International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate how great women are. Instead of hiding our light, we can let it shine bright."

Amy Shaw: Sales Manager

"My career is driven by my love for connecting with people and ensuring they have the best experience possible. I take great pride in supporting my team, helping them grow, and working together to achieve our goals. It’s incredibly rewarding to contribute to our organisation’s success and see it go from strength to strength. My advice to other women looking to succeed? Be yourself and lift others up along the way. A quote that resonates with me is: 'I am who I am today because of the choices I made yesterday.'"

Samantha Roberts: Global Accreditation Director

"As a Global Accreditation Director, my journey has been driven by a deep commitment to ensuring quality and excellence at NQA. Like many women, I have faced challenges in the workplace, including overcoming biases and breaking through the glass ceiling. I have navigated these obstacles by building a strong support network, continuously upskilling, and maintaining resilience. My advice to other women is to believe in their capabilities, seek mentorship, and never shy away from advocating for themselves. I draw inspiration from women like Marie Curie, whose groundbreaking work and perseverance in a male-dominated field continue to motivate me. International Women’s Day is about celebrating achievements while recognising the ongoing need to strive for a more inclusive world."

Gemma Whitfield: HR Manager

*"I went into HR because I have always been a people person, but more than that, I wanted to make a real difference in business through its people. I’m very lucky to have found my home at NQA, where I strive to be the best HR professional I can be. For me, success in HR isn’t just about policies and procedures; it’s about genuinely caring for people and ensuring they feel valued. Without an engaged and loyal workforce, you don’t have a business.

Challenges are inevitable in any career, and mine is no different. There will always be differing viewpoints, drivers, and agendas — and that’s just within a HR department, let alone across an entire organisation! But the key is building relationships and understanding that respect is earned through actions, not just words.

My advice to anyone looking to succeed in their career is to set clear goals and be prepared to work hard for them. 'Dreams come true, not free.' But your career should also be something you are passionate about — we spend a large portion of our lives at work, so there has to be some enjoyment involved! A quote that inspires me is from Oprah Winfrey: 'Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.'

International Women’s Day is about celebrating how far we’ve come. Nothing worth achieving is ever easy, but women are warriors who get things done!"*

Celebrating progress, inspiring change

International Women’s Day is not just about celebration; it’s about recognising the work that still needs to be done to achieve gender equality. At NQA, we are proud to highlight the achievements of women in our organisation and across the industry. Their dedication, resilience, and passion continue to move positive change, shaping the future for generations to come.
